The original Diary, was comprehending six volumes, closely hand written in short-hand by Mr. Pepys himself, belonged to the valuable collection of books and prints, bequeathed by him to Magdalene College, Cambridge • United Kingdom. Samuel Pepys (1633 - 1703) was an English diarist and UK Naval Administrator. He rose to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and King James II • Served as Administrator of the Navy of England and Member of Parliament and is most famous for the diary he kept for a decade while still a young man. The detailed private diary that Pepys kept from 1660 until 1669 was first published in the 19th century and is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War, and the Great Fire of London. The first publication of any of Pepys’ diary was by Richard Neville (later Lord Braybrooke) and Henry Colburn in 1825. Richard Griffin-Neville, Baron Braybrooke (1783-1858) Braybrooke is now chiefly remembered for the part he took in publishing Samuel Pepys' 'Diary' for the first time. Lord Braybrooke brought out a carefully abridged and expurgated version, with a selection of Pepys' private correspondence and many useful notes originally in 1825. This book copy was believed to be of the last 1854 revision • previously “revised & corrected” and several times reprinted, although it did not differ substantially from that of 1848-1849 edition.
