Merry "Kelley" Stevens gained international recognition, mainly in the field of race track paintings and beautiful portraits of some of the finest horses in the world. Admired as one of the most noted equine artists in the United States, Kelly's artwork beautifully captures the horse in its multi-faceted moods of strength, gentleness, intelligence, and athletic prowess. Always in demand, she was commissioned by the Santa Anita Race Track, the Bay Meadows Race Track, The Northern California Thoroughbred Association, and numerous private collectors. Sadly, Kelly Stevens passed away in 1996 and her work has been difficult to find and rarely offered for sale. "Snow Chief" was a classic winner, a multi-millionaire, a blue-collar feel-good story, and a fan favorite. In 24 starts, he won 13 races throughout the United States, and earned $3,383,210. He was the only horse that ever won the Santa Anita Derby and Florida Derby. Not many horses are tried in both races, considering the distance between tracks and the looming Kentucky Derby as a focus for horsemen. Along the way, he earned the respect of racing fans everywhere for his courageous style of racing. Kelly has somehow captured Snow Chief's "gutsiness" in this beautiful print. A rare find, and definitely a collectible. Maybe, if you search long enough, you may be able to locate one, but the price will be much more than my low eBay auction price.
