Description: [PHOTOGRAPHY, PHOTO HISTORY, STEREOVIEWS, UB IWERKS] "LEADVILLE, COLORADO" On offer here is an EARLY LEADVILLE, COLORADO STEREOVIEW (plus an additional) FROM ABOUT THE MID TO LATE 1870'S. The views both measure 4 1/8 x 7 inches on yellow card stock. The mounts were both flat mounts, but have been stored with traditional curved views (Keystone & Underwoods) and have a very slight curve to them now. We believe these two views are 'amateur' views done in the late 1870's (after the 1877 founding) and were found together in the Iwerks collection. The first view features a view of 'Leadville, CO' showing a proud Leadville resident seemingly wanting to document his fine afternoon of axe-work and the timber he's felled in the foreground. Behind him is the Leadville town and the snow capped Rocky Mountains. The second view shows a group 12 individuals on a calm lake or large pond (presumably near Leadville) in a leisurely moment, possibly on a Sunday afternoon. Several of the men shown are wearing hats nearly identical to the man holding the axe in the accompanying stereoview. In our opinion, these views are early (1877 - 1879) amateur Leadview images because: - they square views rendered on yellow stock mounts (indicative of the 1860s' - 1870's) one with a handwritten caption. - the town of Leadville as shown has building density much less than that shown in later years- No sign of the Tabor Opera house or Hotel. In fact, we can't locate many if any brick buildings which would pepper the views seen by 1880 - 1882. (possibly one brick structure at the center left ??) - Several 'log cabin' more primitive cabins shown and possibly being built by the man in the image; indicative of the town being built out before mills were operating sufficiently to meet demand. These images are important and haven't been documented in literature simply because they've probably been in the Iwerks family collection for the better part of 80 - 90 years. We welcome any information or insight local Leadville, CO historians or collectors can provide to inform the collecting world about these two interesting views. Provenance: This item is from the library of legendary Walt Disney animator, inventor, and special effects technician Ub Iwerks. Ub was Walt Disney's first business partner and chief animator. Iwerks collection features many early and important photography books dealing with all aspects of photography, imaging, special effects and photo history. Iwerk's son David also carried on his interest in photography and because of his interest in photography Ub's collection remained in the family from Ub's death in 1971 until recently. We can provide an COA confirming the Iwerks provenance to interested buyers upon request. Please view our other items and search the keyword 'Iwerks'. Please email any questions -
