Description: This rare 1906 postcard features the Geneseo New York Fire Department Wadsworth Hose Company. It's also double-cancelled, also with the city of Piffard, NY listed. Approximate size: 5.5 inches x 3.5 inches The Wadsworth name in the company likely has to do with the founding family of Geneseo, NY, which was the Wadsworth family. The Wadsworth family has a significant history in Geneseo, New York. The town was founded by brothers James and William Wadsworth in 1789. They were originally from Connecticut and came to the Genesee Valley of Western New York State in 1790. They acted as land agents for their cousin, Col. Jeremiah Wadsworth. James Wadsworth was an influential and prominent pioneer, educator, land speculator, agriculturalist, businessman, and community leader of the early Genesee Valley settlements in Western New York State. He was the patriarch of the prominent Genesee Valley Wadsworths. The Wadsworths and their descendants were fundamental in advancing the white settlement of the Genesee Valley and were influential in education, land stewardship, business, politics, and civil life on a local and national level. The Wadsworths were responsible for the establishment of the Genesee Valley Hunt Club, and the family name is well known in the Genesee Valley, especially Geneseo, to the present day. The Wadsworth Homestead in Geneseo is a historic house that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It’s a symbol of the Wadsworth family’s long-standing influence and contribution to the town of Geneseo. It's entirely likely that they funded and started the Wadsworth Hose Co as a way to take care of the fires in the town they founded. Geneseo is a village in the Western Finger Lakes region of New York and is home to the State University of New York-Geneseo. It offers a variety of attractions for visitors, from historical landmarks to natural beauty. Some of the highlights include the National Warplane Museum where you can explore vintage aircraft and learn about the history of aviation, the Deer Run Winery for a relaxing day of wine tasting and scenic views, the Geneseo Riviera Theater which is a restored 1900s venue that hosts live music, comedy, and movies, and the Bronze Bear Statue on Main Street, a symbol of Geneseo’s spirit and pride.
