Description: This is a rare 1856B (1856-B) Sardinia 50 Centesimi coin featuring Vittorio Emmanuel II. With only 9754 fifty Centesimi 1856B (1856-B) minted at the Turin Mint, this coin is a must-have for any serious 19th century world coin collector. The coin's denomination is 50 Centesimi and it is made of 90% silver composition (.900 fineness). The obverse of the coin is minted with a bust of Vittorio Emmanuel II (herein referred to as VEII) facing right. Clear facial features illuminate VEII’s face with detailed hair, a clear ear, salient eyes, nose and upper cheeks. Most notably is his excellency’s beard whose solid detail begins where hair on the right side of VEII’s ear and facial hair beneath the front of VEII’s ear intersect, covering his lower cheek, intersecting his mouth and a mustache in front of his nose. The beard covers his excellency’s chin, and with steady hair detail. The beard evolves into a fixture 2.5 mm in width from lips to upper neck, 3.5 mm length from lips to the beard’s end, pointing directly at the “H” of the Latin “Hier”, and 3 mm length from upper neck to the same end point. The latin VICTORIVS EMMANVEL II·D·G·REX SARD·CYP·ET HIER· 1856B begins its ascent moving clockwise from the left side of Vittorio Emmanuel II’s neck, and arriving at its circular impression around the obverse rim with the year “1856” beneath the neck with a die crack evident at the obverse base The reverse features a Crowned Arms above the 50 Centesimi value, the latter represented as “C•50”. The Latin DVX SAB·GENVAE ET MONTISE·PRINC·PED·&·C•50 is minted around the reverse rim, in front of the salient reeded inner edge that is adjacent to the smooth edge that adorns the circumference of the coin’s reverse. This is the first time in forty years of collecting rare world coins that I have come across a Sardinia 50 centesimi of this year, type and mint mark (B represents the Turin Mint). The rarity is salient in two ways. The 1856 Turin 50 Centesimi is representative of an estimated 0% of the total mintage of 50 Centesimi coins minted in Turin but also in Genève in 1850P & 1860P and Milan in 1860M and 1861M. The Turin dates are 1850B, 1852B-1853B, 1855B-1858B and 1860B (over 980,000 1860M 50 Centesimi coins were minted in Milan representing nearly 90% of all Vittorio Emmanuel II 50 Centesimi coins from 1850-1861 in Sardinia). The coin is circulated and has a beautiful natural silver color with some darkening patina. The coin is uncertified and likewise the coin's grade is ungraded. The KM number is KM #141 and it was manufactured in Italy - Sardinia. This coin belongs to the Coins & Paper Money category and falls under Coins: World, Europe, Italy, San Marino, Vatican, and Italian States (up to 1861) sub-categories, including Sardinia.
