Steam-power has been universally introduced to cope with the problem presented by square miles of cornfields, and mountainous ricks. Not even the steam-engine, however, has been able to rob the harvest work of all its picturesque elements, and, as our illustration shows us, teams both of horses and oxen are still used to supplement the work of the locomotive and to supply the abundant sheaves to be dealt with by the threshing-machine attached to the stationary engine. Already Australia has taken its place among the great wheat-exporting countries of the world, although livestock still holds the first position amongst its food-products.
