Description: A 4-page holograph letter giving details of Quartermaine School,in Haslemere Surrey, established in 1960 by the Ockenden Venture, to serve Polish refugee children from Germany. The writer, apparently a professional aid worker, notes that the Venture served 300-350 children. Most went to local schools where they were housed, and Quartermaine was the only school completely run by the Venture, serving about 26 boys and 26 girls. The school began in 1934 as Stoutley Rough, serving refugee Jewish children, under the auspices of the Quaker Germany Emergency Committee. Ockenden took it over and renamed it in 1960. The writer ran a UN work camp to fix the place up and then stayed. He hoped to go to India soon. He spoke rather pessimistically about the international situation.
