The Graceland website tells the following of Kang Rhee: "Karate Master Kang Rhee, who taught Elvis Presley martial arts, has died. Rhee trained in Kong Soo Do, Chang Mu Kwan, Kwon Bup, Kang Duk Won and Han Kuk Hap Ki Do in the 1950s and 60s. He started PaSaRyu Association in Memphis in 1966. Countless Memphians learned the martial arts at Rhees studio including martial artist Bill Superfoot Wallace and Elvis Presley. Elvis trained with Rhee from 1970-1974 in Memphis. Elvis was awarded the 8th degree black belt by Rhee in 1974. Elvis gave Rhee a custom deluxe Eldorado Cadillac. Elvis father Vernon purchased the car for Elvis, who used it as his personal car for 10 months before gifting it to Rhee. Rhee gave Elvis his karate nickname, Tiger." Priscilla Presleys love for karate was deeply influenced by her relationship with Elvis Presley, who was passionate about the martial art. Elvis first learned karate while serving in the U.S. Army in Germany and continued practicing it throughout his life. In the early 1970s, he trained under Master Kang Rhee, a prominent martial artist in Memphis, and introduced Priscilla to the discipline. Priscilla herself trained under both Kang Rhee and Mike Stone. Her time with Kang Rhee, alongside Elvis, allowed her to experience the discipline and mental focus that karate offered. Later, she trained more closely with Mike Stone, a well-known martial artist, and their professional relationship eventually turned romantic, which contributed to her and Elvis's separation in 1972. Priscillas karate journey was not just about staying active but also about finding personal empowerment and independence. Even after her divorce from Elvis, she continued to practice, using the discipline to build strength and resilience during a challenging phase in her life.
