Description: This listing is for a rare antique portrait of US President Thomas Jefferson Reverse Painted on Glass. This extremely hard to find piece is from the late 18th to Early 19th centuries (est 1790s-1820s) and is a Chinese Export piece. It was framed (likely reframed in the 1890s by them), and likely sold, by the Wunderly Brothers Gallery in Pittsburgh PA at some point in its life. He wears a handsome outfit, and his striking blue coat stands out on the background. Below, on a white stripe, is written “T Jefferson” in a flowing script. This type of art was often produced as a highly desirable export sold in European cities. There are very few of these still remaining in existence as they were quite susceptible to damage. The design is excellent for many rooms and a large variety of decor styles. It makes this an excellent staple piece for your collection, one your friends definitely won’t have! A great collectors item, for use display gifting or decor. This high quality piece is perfect for collectors of Americana, Presidential items, Jefferson Memorabilia, antique art, and much more. The details you find on reverse glass paintings are incredible. The line detail is incredible and paint quality is wonderful, as it does not age or brown like a regular painting on canvas- leaving it brightly colored still. The glass is immediately identifiable as antique. It is not straight, flat glass like you find in mass-produced or modern pieces, the glass is wavy and imperfect with air bubbles and imperfections. There is no signature or mark of any kind visible, but there may be one on the back side, hidden by the frame. I have not tried to open it up to avoid exposing the painting in any way. Currently it appears the cardboard backing is right up against the paint, which is not ideal but I did not want to cause damage via removal. It would likely be best if the new owner inserted a sheet of museum grade acid free paper between the glass & its backing. It is in good condition, with no major damage. No visible cracks or chips to the glass. It has some small areas of loss to the paint- see photos- but appears stable. Could be further stabilized or even fully restored by a professional. Thank you for your consideration, I appreciate your time. Reasonable offers always appreciated. Comes as shown, please see photos for details and measurements. Comes insured in shipment, packed with care.
