Description: Photograph Notes: The line was constructed in 1860 to link Lewes to Tunbridge Wells. The section between Uckfield and Lewes closed in 1969 ostensibly due to a culvert collapsing to the south of Barcombe but more likely due to the fact that Lewes town council needed to build a by-pass that would run over railway land. British Rail were quite happy to sell the land on and began the usual process of downgrading a line, timetable designed to stop people using the service, connections designed to miss each other by minutes and cancelling trains at the last minute. Passenger numbers dropped and when the culvert collapsed an even worse timetabled bus replacement succeeded driving passengers away and the line was closed. Part has re-opened as a steam preservation line at Isfield though the rest has remained in the ownership of British Rail and their successors due to the outside chance of the line re-opening. This section between Barcombe Mills and Anchor Lane is currently a permissive bridleway.
