Not a reproduction. 16 1/4 x 22 inches The theatre collection consists of colored lithographed (pochoir) sheets of French theatrical stage settings, figures, etc. which were designed to be used by children. They were intended to be cut out and glued to card stock.Most are numbered and were printed by Pellerin and Cie. At the head of each sheet is Imagerie d'Epinal which was founded in 1796. _________In 1796, Jean Charles Pellerin set up the “Imagerie d’Epinal” and popularized printed images of everyday scenes. Épinal, France is best known for the "Images d'Epinal" - which is now a common expression in French language - the popular prints created by a local company, Imagerie Pellerin and the Pellerin family. These pochoir (hand painted using templates) woodcuts of military subjects, Napoleonic history, storybook characters and other folk themes were widely distributed throughout the 19th century. The Golden Griffin Gallery, NYC formed a partnership with the Pellerin Family in the 1950s, becoming the sole distributor for Pellerin Imagerie in North America. The Golden Griffin Gallery closed in the early 1970s. The Estate is now in possession of the residual inventory.
