ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Ultra Rare Vintage 1929 ‘Large Format’ Color German Collotype Lithograph (Not a more-modern reproduction) of Beautiful Tahitian Coastal Beach Scene with Horses & Riders titled, “Reiters am Strand” (Translates from German: “Riders on the Beach”), after the original 1902 oil on canvas painting by the famous listed Post-impressionist painter, ‘Paul Gauguin’ (French, 1848-1903), whose printed signature and date ‘1902’, appears lower-left in the image corner, and was painted one year before his death in 1903 after being seriously ill for two years. Gauguin’s original title for the painting in French was “Cavaliers sur la plage (I)” (Translates: “Riders on the beach (I)”). Publisher & Print Info: The publisher’s copyright, date, name, location and printing info, ‘Copyright 1929 By Franz Hanfstaengl Munchen Printed In Germany’, appears lower-right in the bottom outer margin area just beneath the image, and the artists’ name & dates, ‘Paul Gauguin 1848-1903’, appears printed lower-left respectively. The publisher’s printed initials, copyright & date, ‘F©H, 1929’, appears printed lower-right in the image area, and their embossed circular logo (three dolphins in circle motif) with their name around it as, ‘Hanfstaengl Druck’ (Translates: Hanfstaengl Print), appears lower-left in the bottom outer margin area just below the artist’s printed name. The reproduction info & location, ‘Reproduction Reservée S.P.A. 12 Rue Henner, Paris’ (Translates: Reproduction Reserved S.P.A. 12 Rue Henner, Paris), appears upper-left in the top outer margin area just above the image, and the inventory number, ‘13207’, appears upper-right respectively. The title isn’t printed on the piece but was identified via research and an alternate title for the piece in French was, “Cavaliers au Bord de la Mer” (Translates: “Riders by the Sea”) and was published February 6, 1929 by Franz Hanfstaengl (German Publishers, 1852-1980) who were known for their high-quality reproductions with fine grain collotypes, early photographs, heliogravures, etchings, etc. The descendants of Franz Hanfstaengl founded subsidiaries in London and in New York and retired from the business in 1980 after 128 years. They sold the business to Blanc Kunstverlag in Munich who continued the Hanfstaengl tradition making available those rare etchings and copperprints to international art-buyers worldwide. The Collotype is on a nice ivory-colored wove paper stock. We purchased this Collotype a long time ago directly from the May-Ro Galleries who were a picture framing business & gift shop located at 65 Allen Street in downtown Buffalo, NY, when the gallery went out of business and their hand-written in pencil name (written by the Meibohm family) appears on verso in the upper left corner. About the Painting: Gauguin’s original painting of this scene is in the permanent collection of the Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany where it was initially acquired in 1904 for the Museum Folkwang in Hagen (1904-1922) and has been in the Museum Folkwang, Essen since 1922. The commentary for the painting as listed in the museum states: “Cavaliers sur la plage”, the third painting that Osthaus acquired from a group of late works of the artist, who had died in 1903, sold by Ambroise Vollard in Paris, shows a beach scene that may well have taken place on Hiva-Oa, a Marquesas Island near Tahiti. The artist, already seriously ill, had moved there in 1901. Two riders galloping from the left, in hooded jackets, without or with faces hidden behind masks, cross paths with a group of riders obviously heading towards the sea visible in the background. The painting has a fascinating coloring, which Gauguin masterly constructed on the pink-purple of the beach dominating the composition. Gauguin had already produced such beach scenes of occasionally unnatural colors during his time in Normandy and Brittany. Apart from an obvious reference to Edgar Degas in the construction of the image, it articulates a tangible longing, a romantically inflected view of the broad, unending sea. References also exist to Albrecht Dürer's “Ritter, Tod und Teufel” (1513) which Gauguin had pasted on the cover of his manuscript Avant et après, completed shortly before his death in 1903; the text is a look back at his artistic development. Gauguin also did another similar painting titled “Cavaliers sur la plage (II)” that same year which was in the collection of the Greek billionaire shipping tycoon, Stavros Spyrou Niarchos (1909-1996). Many people have coined the Niarchos Collection as one of the most important modern art and impressionist collections and comes under the five most valuable art collections in the world. After Stavros Niarchos’ death, his son, Philip Niarchos inherited the art collection and added some great paintings to the collection which includes, Vincent Van Gogh’s “Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe”—Interesting side story about van Gogh and his friendship with Gauguin and that aforementioned painting: When Van Gogh was living in Arles, he invited Paul Gauguin to come over and stay for a few weeks. But the stay quickly got over as both artists got into a heated argument. When Van Gogh threatened Gauguin with a razor, he ended up injuring himself. Gauguin left the house for the night, and when he came back, there was police in the house and blood all over. Surprisingly, Van Gogh had no recollection of the whole fit. For all his self-portraits, Van Gogh used a mirror, so his left side in the painting is actually his right side. (Sources: Museum Folkwang, Inv. G52; vangoghstudio, “Vincent van Gogh paintings at the Collection Niarchos”; and Wikipedia) Size & Condition: The size with wide margins is 29-7/16” x 32-9/16”, Image size is 25-1/8” x 28-7/8”. The Collotype is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade—gorgeous fresh vibrant color and tones! This Collotype has been in one of our archive drawers amongst other prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition—what a beauty and will look gorgeous all framed-up! No real or significant damage at all on this gorgeous piece with the small exceptions of: Only two extremely tiny, insignificant and completely negligible top outer margin edge tears, one is 9/16” and the other is a tiny 3/16” dent-tear which has a tiny triangle piece missing and a little associated surface paper-loss, and the tears are repaired from behind with archival tape for protection—and are negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out; Minimal & very slight small crescent-creasing here & there in the image area which aren’t even noticeable except from behind, as well as other minimal light creasing here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edges and some in the outer margin corners with associated tiny dog-ear bends, as well as some extremely minimal outer margin edge wear with a few dents & dings here & there—all of are also negligible and easily matted & framed out; Ultra minimal (only a handful) of tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are barely noticeable (if you really hunt for them) and aren’t even worth mentioning either; Negligible toning of the stock from age which isn’t even really noticeable especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself and isn’t worth mentioning as well. This beautiful vintage collotype has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early.
