Description: PATO ANANYAN / PATVAKAN ALEXANDRI ANANYAN (12/27/1911 - 5/6/1991), was film & theatre artist-painter. Born in Dilizhan, in Armenia. From 1929 till 1933 studied at the Architectural Institute in Leningrad, and in 1935 graduated the Leningrad Painting, Sculpture and Architectural Institute. From 1930 till 1935 he worked at the Leningrad Opera & Ballet Theatre as an artist-painter. In 1935 returned to Yerevan to work there at the Opera & Ballet Theatre, heading the artist-painters, *CHIO-CHIO-SAN*, *ANUSH*, *ARSHAK II*, and *GAYANE*, are the operas whose costumes and stage designs were excuted by the artist. P. Ananyan also worked for the Sundukyan and the Russian Theatres in Yerevan, as well as for the Hyekino (Armfilm) studio;the Armenian Film Company. In 1948 went back to Leningrad where till 1956 worked at the Musical Comedian Theatre. For his more than 100 theatre and film designs (Zangezur, Lernayn Arshav, Yergum e Gohar Gasparyanh, Garineh, etc...), in 1946 he was granted the Meritted Artist of Armenia, an honored state title. Sketch-drawing for a theatre performance by PATO ANANYAN from the 1930s, measures almost 13" x 17" , has small tears on the edges.
