Description: [Lot of Palm Beach and St. Augustine, Florida vacation photos.] Title: [Lot of Palm Beach and St. Augustine, Florida vacation photos.] Description: Palm Beach and St. Augustine, Florida, ca. 1901-1905. 57 original photos (approx. 1" x 1" to 6" x 4"), including 40 silver-prints mounted in red cloth album, 11 loose silver prints, and 6 b&w real photo postcards (two are duplicates); Also included are 2 color-printed postcards and 1 b&w photomechanical postcard. An album of photographs documenting visits of a family (and presumably their friends) to Palm Beach and St. Augustine during Florida's tourism boom at the turn of the century. Florida tourism spiked at the turn of the century following the expansion of the Florida East Railroad and Henry M. Flagler's development of the Florida Grand Hotels. Co-founder of Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller, Flagler is credited with transforming swampy Florida into a choice resort destination. The thirty-eight Palm Beach photos mounted in the album document a boating trip three couples took; a large cottage; a lady in a wicker wheelchair pushed by an African American attendant in a boater-hat and bow-tie; and a family beach scene by an ocean pier. The last page of the album includes two photos identified in a period inscription as taken in "St. Augustine March 1902." The eleven loose photographs are mainly resort scenes. Of the seven St. Augustine real photo postcards, two are dated 1905 in pencil on the verso: one of a lady and girl posing at the (unidentified) Castillo de San Marcos National Monument; the other of two gentlemen posing by the Old City Gates. In another image, a well-dressed young girl poses on an ox cart. Two 1902 and 1903 St. Augustine color postcards by the Detroit Photographic Co. respectively picture the "Oldest House in America," and "St. George Street." A b&w postcard (published by J. Murray Jordan of Philadelphia), captioned "Oldest House in St. Augustine as it was," documents its condition prior to its rehabilitation. Penciled on the verso of one boat ride image is "Mrs Norris & Mr Sloane, 1905, St. Augustine. 142." REFERENCES: Turkel, Stanley.
