Description: Price includes PAIR of pendants as shown. More measurements are listed at the end of this description. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This pair of large, collectible, Turkmen chakalik (chekelik) pendants was handcrafted during the early-1900's for the Ersari sub-tribe of Turkmenistan in Central Asia. They are old tribal jewelry pendants - not new reproductions. More measurements are listed at the end of this description. Chakalik (chakkalik, chekilik) pendants are distinctively Turkmen. They were used as ornate jewelry-accents, affixed to coats and other garments as closures. The traditional shape of a chakalik is that of a stylized fish - a Turkmen symbol of abundance and femininity. Since water and women share life-giving powers, animals associated with water symbolize the feminine aspect. These magnificent old chakaliks were handcrafted of 70% silver that was gold-gilded to highlight their unique designs. Long charm-dangles hang below, jingling together with movement to alert admirers and scare away demons. The red oval beads add vibrant color, while warding off the evil eye. Each pendant was sturdily handmade, and does not bend. Today, chakalik are also worn as headdresses, on belts, and/or attached to garments. The narrower ends have embedded hooks for securing in place. In excellent collectible condition, this pair of old silver Turkmen chakaliks have a warm age-patina and very mild wear-patterns. To show relative size, I placed a one in the hair of a life-sized manikin. Price includes PAIR as shown.
