Description: Declining an invitation to deliver a lecture, in an autograph letter, signed by Barnum, February 15, 1868, on his stationery Author: BARNUM, P. T. (1810-1891) Title: Declining an invitation to deliver a lecture, in an autograph letter, signed by Barnum, February 15, 1868, on his stationery Publication: Feb. 15, 1868 Description: One page. 7 3/4 x 4 1/2 in., approx. 90 words. Addressed and dated by hand, 438 Fifth Avenue. New York Feb. 15 / (18)68. Faint old fold lines. Barnum writes to a Mr. J.A. Woodward [sp?] declining his invitation to deliver a lecture as the travel would take three days of his time. Barnum says he is declining scores of invitations nearer home and doesn't "feel the ambition to go so far." He signs the letter "P.T. Barnum," and affixes a postscript which he initials. In the addendum he mentions he would require a price of $150 for his time, plus expenses suggesting that alone should make his correspondent think no more about it. The letter is matted, glazed and framed with a color caricature of Barnum seated at a dining table, a napkin tucked into his collar, approx. 12 x 7 in., by Spy which appeared in the November 16, 1889 issue of Vanity Fair.
