SAE Type 630 stainless steel (more commonly known as 17-4 PH, or simply 17-4; also known as UNS 17400) is a grade of martensitic precipitation hardened stainless steel. It contains approximately 15–17.5% chromium and 3–5% nickel, as well as 3–5% copper. Just as all martensitic metals are,17-4 is magnetic. 17-4 PH tolerates post-production machining and electroplating very well. The alloy used in the manufacturing process produces components with a matte surface finish that require no secondary deburring or polishing after sintering, but thanks to the chromium composition, the surface polishes up nicely with simple carbide tooling if you need a “shinier” finish. The nature of this business model has plusses and minuses. The plusses are you get top quality original parts for less than you would pay otherwise. The main drawback, however, is that for most of our parts we cannot just pick up the phone and order more. Obtaining most of our products is hit and miss. Some items are produced enough that we can get more relatively easily, but others depend on if there was overstock accidentally produced.
