Description: Another great industrial etching by Otto KULER Otto Kuhler - "Floating Drydock" - 1938Offered here is an original etching by American artist Otto Kuhler (1894-1977). This etching on cream laid paper, has original signature in pencil at lower right. The image measures ~7 7/8 x 9 3/4 inches (plate mark). The sheet size is ~9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches and the overall mat size is 14 x 16 inches.Original label reads "Construction on Site for Floating Drydock of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp. Ltd., Baltimore, Md.". This was a private limited edition print commissioned by D. C. Elphinstone Co. as a complimentary Christmas gift in 1938.Print is unframed and still in it's original mat, as issued, pasted at two points on upper margin to folding mat. Shows light UV time stain. Otherwise very good condition.-----------Otto August Kuhler (1894-1977)Otto Kuhler was active in New York, New Mexico and Colorado. He is known for railway train engine design, trains in landscape painting, skyscapes, and printmaking. He was an American designer and one of the best known industrial designers for the American railroads. In addition he was a prolific artist of industrial aesthetics and of the American West in general. Influenced by the art of Joseph Pennell, he learned etching after World War I and enrolled at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf. After emigration to the US in 1923 he worked as a commercial artist in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His works centered on industrial landscapes, steel works and locomotives. He opened a Manhattan design studio in New York and in 1928 became a US citizen. After ending his design career in New York, he bought a cattle ranch in Colorado. He later moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and continued painting, eventually moving back to Denver, where he died in 1977 at the age of 84.
