Description: Original WWII War Poster, Gas Obstacle Course Chemical Warfare School Edgewood MD. Original WWII era poster certificate** circa 1943 to Pvt Martin M. Kelly USMC. Condition: Excellent. Photos better show condition. 16" high by 20" wide. ** This uncommon pictorial certificate signifies that the recipient, Pvt Martin M. Kelly, successfully completed the Gas Obstacle Course at the Edgewood Arsenal in November of 1943. Seven different test stations are caricatured in an amusing illustrated style; though the soldiers are shown enduring hexachloroethane (HC), chlorine (CL), and chloroacetophenone (CNB), crawling through barbed wire, and disarming booby traps. The use of gas attacks on the Western Front in World War I prompted the United States Department of Defense to invest in the nation’s first chemical weapons program at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. The manufacture and filling of gas shells began as early as September, 1917 and the Chemical Warfare Service was officially designated by the War Department less than a year later. Operations would steadily expand in subsequent months but stagnate into the early 1930s (the U.S. did not agree to the anti-gas stipulations of the Hague Conference), before appropriations jumped again from $1.5 to $2.8 million in 1938/1939. By America’s entry into World War II, Edgewood was a massive complex that included manufacturing plants, testing fields, training courses, medical and support facilities, and storage depots. After the war, classified medical studies were performed for decades on troops stationed at the camp, often unaware of the circumstances. All posters are original and as such are decades old. Paper does not age well and these posters will have flaws--I will attempt to list them all, but rely on the photos for your final buying decision.
