Description: This looks to be a 19th century antique, but the date, translated from the Roman numerals "MCMLXV" reads: 1000 + 900 + 60 + 5 = 1965. The paddle seems to have been created by "Terry," class of '69 and presented to "Al," class of '70. Listed on it are the fraternity's charter members: F. Benner, G. Grandmayr, M. Bredie, G. Clark, J. Lord, M. Moon, R. Sierchio, and P. Weir. I found this paddle in a Maine country auction and some of these surnames listed are known to be old Maine family names. Measuring 36" long and about 5 5/8" wide, the paddle weighs 2 lbs and is carved from hardwood, but not oak. Maybe walnut? There is a long a crack along the grain. This crack was at one time taped with regular old cellophane tape which left a residue and I've removed most of that from the front. It's fine without the tape-- still in one piece. The history of paddling as a form of hazing in fraternities dates back to the late 19th century. After WWII, hazing became more violent, and laws began to prohibit the practice. Now the old "paddle tradition" has morphed into the fashioning of a unique paddle gift to commemorate fraternity membership. This old fraternity paddle has got a great antique look and it makes a terrific, decorative, conversation piece.
