Back in the days before home video made every episode of the original Star Trek television series available, owning recordings of the music was the next best thing, especially for those who admired the scoring of the original series. Tony Bremner and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra recorded this CD in the mid-'80s, the second of two modern orchestral re-recordings of music from the original series. The best and earliest of the scores represented here is Joseph Mullendore's music from "The Conscience of the King," a first-season episode in which Captain Kirk (William Shatner) finds himself pursuing a latter-day war criminal (Arnold Moss) who may or may not be masquerading as an actor. Mullendore's music is lyrical and lively, and proved good enough to earn itself a place in several other episodes that season; he has a good sense of drama, setting, movement, and melody that manifests itself in this moody setting depicting the character of Lenore, the wanted man's mad, murderous daughter. The shifts from romance to madness are quietly harrowing, like the transformation of the character herself, as she alternately charms and tries to murder Captain Kirk. "Spectre of the Gun," written by Jerry Fielding, is attached to an eerie third season episode in which the starship's crew finds itself in Tombstone, AZ, on the eve of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral in the guise of the losing side. The music is rather formless to the ear, very much in keeping with the eerie, dreamlike order of action in this episode, set in the midst of an illusion -- the unifying portion of the score is Fielding's odd variation on the tune "Buffalo Gal." The third score represented, "The Enemy Within," written by Sol Kaplan, is one of the more deeply evocative in the history of the series, depicting the inner turmoil of the Kirk character when a malfunctioning transporter splits him into two physically identical but emotionally opposed beings; Kaplan's music is most effective when it is underscoring the outbursts of violence from Kirk's aggressive side and the despair and fear afflicting his intellectual half . Oddly enough, he uses the same thematic material, completely rescored, to capture the fury of one character and the despair of the other; parts for solo viola and surging brass stand out. The music for "I, Mudd," by Samuel Matlovsky, is entertaining enough to enjoy despite being the most obvious programmatic material on this disc, intended to accompany a very specific light-hearted adventure.
