Salvador Dalí was commissioned by Producer Albert R. Broccoli in 1973, to create the cards and background prop artwork for the James Bond film “Live and Let Die”. Unfortunately the project failed to make the final cut for the cards and background artwork for the movie when Salvador Dalí wanted a fee well beyond the film’s budget. They opted to have and use a Scottish artiest Fergus Hall do the deck and final artwork. Dali finished his deck in 1984 and accompanying artwork and released it in a limited edition. These cards are the 1st edition set. The original set sold out very quickly but latter edition and currently they are being sold on the Tascen website. This original set is opulently done with gold leaf side and gold back. Original edition opens from the top not the side. Made in Spain 1984. About the Deck This is the original 1984 first edition deck. With gold edged cards. Very rare and collectable. This deck is comprised of 78 cards with book in three languages written by Johannes Fiebig. Deck is 5 ½ inch high by 3 inch wide, box contains sealed deck and book. His father Salvador was a lawyer and mother and house wife Felipa was his principle influence for his artistic talents. His mother died when he was 16 and profoundly influence his later life. He received formal art training at Municipal Drawing School at Figueres in 1916, and began to move towards Surrealism in 1920’s. One of his best known works The Persistence of Memory was completed in 1931 cementing him as one of the centuries most flamboyant and well-known artists. He later attributed his love for opulent lifestyle to his Arab linage and Moorish background. He started to live Gala (Elena Ivanovna Diakonova) (the wife of poet Paul Éluard) in 1929 and were married in a civil ceremony Paris France in 1934. His art style is easily recognizable, his artistic abilities as a drafts man and surrealist made him one of the most associated names with Surrealist and Modern art. Salvador Dale had one child José van Roy Dalí a boy born in 1940. Little is known about his early life but he became an artist in his own right. Notably he was given the title of Margues de Dali de Pubol (where he lived) by King Juan Carlos in 1982. This was a hereditary title (being passed on by inheritance) but Dale requested it changed to life- only in 1983.
