Description: George Roy Partridge (American, 1888 – 1984), known professionally as Roi Partridge, was an important early 20th century etcher with outstanding draftsmanship. His etchings are sculptural and majestic — yet intimate in size. The lines appear as rich threads of black ink, fuzzy on the paper and raised. This same Paris etching is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Object Number 1935.13.241) and can be seen online here: https://americanart.si.edu/artwork/lile-de-la-cite-paris-19251 Original copper etching on paperboard Framed behind mat under glass in this antique, oak frame which measures 15 3/8" X 18 3/8" Title L’Ile de la Cite–Paris Artist Roi Partridge (pencil signed "Roy Partridge") Date ca. 1913 Plate: 10 x 7 7⁄8 in. (25.3 x 20.0 cm) Partridge studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and studied etching in Munich. Then, in Paris he apprenticed for three years to Bertha Jaques, the American printmaker who later founded the Chicago Society of Etchers. While in Paris, architectural landmarks and portraits were his main subjects, as in the print offered here. When he returned to the States, he married the famed photographer Imogen Cunningham, and his circle of friends included Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, and Maynard Dixon. Partridge also excelled at photography, but was overshadowed in that field by his wife and friends. Forty-two of Partridge's etchings were displayed at the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in 1915 and numerous exhibitions followed, including solo exhibitions at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Los Angeles County Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution. He was a member of the California Society of Etchers, Chicago Society of Etchers, Northwest Printmakers, and Society of American Etchers. In 1949 Partridge won election to full Academician in the National Academy of Design. His etchings were honored with numerous awards and are represented in numerous public collections, including The Amarillo Museum of Art (Amarillo, Texas), the Bancroft Library (University of California), the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Frye Art Museum (Seattle, Washington), the Grinnell College Museum of Art, the Honolulu Museum of Art, Mills College, the Mobile Museum of Art (Mobile, Alabama), the Monterey Museum of Art (Monterey, California), the New York Public Library, the Oakland Museum, the Portland Art Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art (San Diego, California), the Seattle Art Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.), the University of Michigan Museum of Art (Ann Arbor, Michigan) and the Weisman Art Museum (University of Minnesota) are among the public collections holding works by Partridge.
