This soft-covered vintage booklet measures approximately 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" and includes 60 pages. An interesting side-story to this booklet: both of the covers are not the usual softcover "type" - they are thin paper covers, with the thin paper pages "allowing an uneven right hand margin" which helped the booklet to be published to the "track and field public at a most attractive price" (so stated on the first inside page). This rare Track & Field publication was published by Track & Field News magazine (Tafnews Press). Maxwell Stiles is a legendary sports journalist and author who dedicated much of his career in reporting on the sport of track and field (please see the booklet's back cover, which lists Stiles' bio.). As stated inside the booklet on the very first page, the Stiles-written stories selected for this "Back Track" publication were first printed in the Los Angeles Mirror-News, the Long Beach Press-Telegram, the Oakland Tribune, the Los Angeles Examiner, World Sports magazine of London, and Track & Field News. The Maxwell Stiles stories range from 1921 through 1958, and cover such iconic names in track and field such as Charles Paddock, Paavo Nurmi, Percy Williams, Ralph Hill, Lauri Lehtinen, Jesse Owens, Mel Patton, Rafer Johnson, Bobby Morrow, Mal Whitfield, Jim Thorpe, Babe Didrikson, Parry O'Brien and many, many others! <>Vintage track and field books/booklets are generally considered scarce, simply because demand for such books was low.
