In Celtic Ireland, a shillelagh was a formidable weapon, typically crafted from blackthorn wood or sturdy oak.The name "shillelagh" is derived from the blackthorn trees found in the Shillelagh Forest, although the origin of the weapon itself may or may not be directly linked to the area. Early versions of the shillelagh had a hardened root on the striking end, while more refined ones featured a hollowed-out end filled with molten lead, making it a deadly weapon in close combat. For centuries, the Irish utilized the shillelagh in combat, with the gallowglass warriors of Clan Donnell potentially perfecting its usage. These warriors were skilled and agile, displaying techniques reminiscent of martial arts using nun chucks or stick fighting. Located in County Wicklow, the Shillelagh Forest, or what remains of it, is found in Tomnafinnoge Woods. This woodland fragment is the last surviving part of the once vast oak woods that once covered southern Wicklow. The timber from these woods were used for notable structures like King's College in Cambridge,Westminster Abbey in London, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and Trinity College in Dublin,as well as the impressive ships of the English and later British Navy.
