Butler was born in 1947 in Pasadena, California and she died in 2006 in Lake Forest Park, Washington. Her father died when she was seven years old and she was raised by her mother and maternal grandmother. She grew up in the racially integrated community which allowed her to experience cultural and ethnic diversity in the midst of racial segregation. She was shy and awkward, which made schoolwork difficult and made her the target of bullies. As a result, she frequently passed the time reading at the Pasadena Central Library. She quickly became interested in science fiction magazine such as Amazing Stories, Galaxy Science Fiction, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. She read stories by John Brunner, Zenna Henderson, Theodore Sturgeon, and others. She wrote reams of pages in what she called her “big pink notebook.” At the age of ten she begged her mother to buy her a Remington typewriter. At age twelve she watched a televised version of the film Devil Girl From Mars (1954) and concluded that she could write a better story. She drafted what would later become the basis for her ‘Patternist novels.’ She graduated from John Muir High School in 1965. Then she attended Pasadena City College at night and worked during the day. As a freshman she won a college-wide short-story contest, earning her first income as a writer. She also got the “germ of the idea” for what would become her novel KINDRED. In 1968 she graduated from PCC with an Associate of Arts degree with a focus in history. Butler then worked at a series of temporary jobs so that she could concentrate on her writing. She also enrolled in writing courses through UCLA Extension. For the next five she worked on the series of novels that later became what is known as the “Patternist” series which consists of PATTERNMASTER, MIND OF MY MIND, and SURVIVOR. In 1978 she was able to make enough money from her writing to be able to stop working the temp jobs. She also wrote WILD SEED and CLAY’S ARK (offered here). She won Hugo Awards for her short story “Speech Sounds” and for her novelette “Blood Child.” In 1995 she became the first science fiction writer to be awarded a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, an award that came with a prize of $295,000. During Butler’s later years, she struggled with writer’s block and depression, partly caused by the side effects of medication for high blood pressure. Unfortunately she dies outside her home in Lake Forest, Washington in 2006 at the age of only 58. Octavia Butler is the author of such great and famous books as the “Patternist” series consisting of PATTERNMASTER, MIND OF MY MIND, SURVIVOR, WILD SEED, and CLAY’S ARK (offered here); the “Xenogenesis” series consisting of DAWN, ADULTHOOD RITES, and IMAGO; the “Parable” series consisting of PARABLE OF THE SOWER and PARABLE OF THE TALENTS; KINDRED, FLEDGLING, and several others.
