This really nice antique spat-footed marigold carnival glass (iridized) plate with the ever-popular "GRAPE AND CABLE" interior pattern was made by the Northwood Glass Company about 1908. (Northwood Grape and Cable Spat-Footed Marigold Carnival Glass Plate circa 1908. Photo taken indoors with no flash.) Very Brief Background on Northwood & Dugan. Thomas Dugan and his cousin, Harry C. Northwood, started out in the 1880s as employees at the Hobbs-Brockunier Glass firm in Wheeling, West Virginia. Eventually, Harry would form the Northwood Glass Company of Wheeling, West Virginia and Thomas would form the Dugan Glass Company of Indiana, Pennsylvania. Both companies were kingpins of the carnival and opalescent glass market in the early 1900's. Trading, swapping, or "borrowing" one another's glass moulds has been speculated. Both Northwood and Dugan-Diamond Glass shut down in the mid-1920s. Condition. This plate is in very good condition with no cracks or chips. The iridescence is evenly applied and very pretty. There are some rough mould-pulls on the bottom edges of the feet from manufacturing (please see close-up photos directly below). A very pretty piece and a nice find! (Rough mould-seam pull on spatula foot edge) (Rough mould-seam pull on spatula foot edge) There are, of course, the usual minor straw marks ("shearing tool marks") and internal air bubbles from manufacturing commonly associated with the making of old EAPG, carnival, and opalescent glass. Each and every piece of old carnival and opalescent glass is hand finished which means they are all unique. No two pieces of old carnival and opalescent glass are identical. ... would stand very proud alongside any Northwood, Dugan, Jefferson, Millersburg, Fenton, Westmoreland, Imperial, Sowerby, or other antique glass from the makers of fine opalescent, carnival glass, and EAPG.
