Just when a player feels at one with the routing, it veers away from the line of instinct. Welcome to golf in Scotland. The course at North Berwick starts at a curious place. Complicating things on the tee are the distractions of non golfers walking along the path to the beach at about the length of even the most conservative shot. Such an opener is bizarre, in both its zaniness and its ability to stimulate the brain and test concentration. Then jarringly but softly, at the 2nd tee, the player is confronted with a very conventional golf hole, over glorious linksland. A drive is required as far right as feasible to a fairway curving that way over the beach and on to an inviting green in a small hollow. And the round has begun. A wall in the middle of a fairway? Cross over to tees that seem backward? Once a golfer gets on the ground, all preconceptions become misconceptions, and all cetainties become ambiguities. such are the unusual challenges on North Berwick!
