Description: Norma Jaciledo Belleza Oil Painting on Old Wood Bowl Listed Filipino Artist 1982 Description and Item Information Up for sale is this beautiful, vintage Norma Jaciledo Belleza oil painting on an old wood bowl. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This colorful piece of art was executed on a large, handled, wooden bowl. In her folk genre style, Belleza depicted a woman holding a young boy; both wear cheery, patterned clothing. In the background, there is leafy foliage and a basket of fruit. The rustic, primitive wooden bowl on which this was painted has a handle at the upper end. The bowl measures approximately 25 inches by 22 1/4 inches by 5 inches, and the wood is about 5/8 inch to 3/4 inch thick, depending on where it is measured. The back side is unpainted. Unpacked, this piece weighs 6 pounds 10.7 ounces. It would be a fine addition to a collection of Filpino art. Identification This piece was painted by Norma Jaciledo Belleza (1939 - ), and it is dated "82" (for 1982) at the lower right of the scene. On the upper part of the back side, there are some markings done in red including a circled "3" next to another circled number (possibly a "6") that was crossed out. There is a date in red, "11-13-82." Handwritten on the wood in black is, "#1848." There is a torn, stained paper envelope affixed to the back, and on this, "#1848" is written, along the first part of a price, "$," the rest of which was torn off by a previous owner. Norma Jaciledo Belleza is a well-listed Filipino artist, with a biography and auction records on askART. She also has a Wikipedia page. Per askART, this award-winning artist was born in San Fernando, Pampanga, Phillipines in 1939. Members of her family were movie marquee and billboard painters, and her husband and their three children are also artists. Belleza held a solo exhibition at Phil Art Gallery in 1963, where she and her husband, Angelito Antonio, were artists in residence. After a decade-long hiatus in painting (presumably while she raised her children), she held a solo exhibition at Metro Gallery in 1976. Belleza has had many one person shows at galleries such as Lutz and ABC. The Jaycee International Art Center and the University of Sydney International House have her works as part of their collections. Over her art career, Belleza's paintings have evolved from dark and somber works to colorful and detailed expressions of the folk genre. The age and exact origin of the primitive, wooden bowl on which the painting was executed is not known. It is older than the painting. Condition This piece looks good overall, as shown. The colors are bright. This item is a bit dusty, and I have not attempted to clean it. There are a few very small dabs of white paint. The back side of the bowl has some holes in it, possibly where it previously had a hanging wire affixed; none of the holes are visible on the front side. The bowl on which the painting was executed is primitive in nature, and it has splits, chips, rough areas, stains, and other imperfections which add character. Other works found online by this artist were executed on similar wooden bowls. Presumably, the bowl was already in a rustic state when the artist selected it as a substrate. The paper envelope affixed to the back has losses, staining, and rips. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1.
