The New Merchants Exchange Building. After the Great Fire of 1835, Wall Street had to be rebuilt. The new home of the Merchants Exchange opened in 1842 and was called the Tontine building. It covered an entire block. The Merchants Exchange Society had expanded its membership by joining forces with other brokers and it reincorporated under the new name, New York Joint Stock Exchange Company. The Tontine Building, with its saucer-like dome, was constructed on the old site of the Tontine Coffee House. The three-story building housed various businesses including finance, commodities, shipping, auctioneering, and sales. Later in the century, the New York Custom House moved there, and the structure was remodeled. Much later it was turned into a hotel and later, still into condominiums. $4.00 flat rate shipping within the United States. #1602
