Description: NATIVE SILVER CRYSTALS - 2.2 cm - LA ENCANTADA MINE, MEXICO 27816 NATIVE SILVER CRYSTALS - 2.2 cm - LA ENCANTADA MINE, MEXICO This is a good thumbnail of native silver on matrix from an uncommon location. The La Encantada mine had excellent production of silver for its owner, Penoles, S.A., in the late 70’s and early 80’s. In 1982 the mine flooded and has remained this way since. We had an opportunity to meet a mine engineer who worked there during its productive years and obtained a small number of specimens. The specimens are a mix of crystallized silver on matrix and plates of leaf silver both on and off matrix. The matrix often includes a blue calcite colored by ajoite. Silver leaf and wire are the more common habits of native silver. Crystals are less common. This thumbnail has a mass of bright silver crystals in an interesting formation on a matrix with the blue calcite. A 10x loupe helps see the details well.
