The National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) is a service medal of the United States Armed Forces that is awarded for honorable active military service during one of four specified periods of national emergency: The NDSM was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953 and has been awarded to millions of service members since then. To be eligible for the NDSM, a service member must have served on active duty for at least 30 consecutive days during one of the specified periods of national emergency. Service members who served in the National Guard or Reserves during these periods are also eligible for the medal, provided they were mobilized and served on active duty for at least 30 consecutive days. The NDSM is a bronze medal with a suspension bar and ribbon. The obverse of the medal depicts a bald eagle perched on a sword and palm branch, with the words "NATIONAL DEFENSE" inscribed above. The reverse of the medal depicts a shield with a laurel wreath below and an oak leaf wreath above, with the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" inscribed between the wreaths. The ribbon of the NDSM is 1.375 inches wide with nine stripes, five yellow and four white, alternating in width. The ribbon also has a narrow red stripe in the center. The NDSM is a prestigious award that recognizes the service of American soldiers who have defended their country during times of national emergency.
