Wear, toning and marks to boards. Endpapers tanned, small tear to rear one. Binding a bit loose but still holding firm. Some markings to a few pages. The photographs are the most accurate guide to condition. Context: A sensation title by Campbell Praed. A cruel and unloving husband, knowing his wife to have been impregnated by a despised nephew, leaves a will which obligates her to have no contact with her child nor the nephew unless she is happy to forfeit her inheritance ie the choice between happiness or poverty - hence the symbolism of being beaten with a scourge stick. A decent reading copy of a scarce title in the Colonial edition state. (Circa 10% of first printings were produced for Colonial circulation, hence their proportionate scarcity.)
