Description: For sale is a charming modernist town scape oil painting by the New York and Monhegan island, modernist artist Yolanda Fusco (1920 - 2009) Said to be a townscape scene of a small town in Maine but there is no identifying information on the reverse. The artist worked in New York, Monhegan Island, and Main, so it could be one of several locations, but it certainly has that look of a small town in a quaint little village in Maine. Oil on canvas board and circa 1950's or so in age. Appears to possibly be one of her earlier works. She moved to an even more modernist style in her career. The painting is done in an almost birdseye vantage point. Certainly up on a mountain or hill looking down into the small village dotted with home, factories, bridges, smokestacks, water towers, farms and grain silos. All the things one would expect to find in a small village. Surrounded by gentle rolling hills in the distance. Just a wonderful and charming paintings by the artist. We expect us to sell pretty fast because we don't really see these works by her for sale much!! Unframed as acquired. Condition: The painting has some bowing to it more so on one side. We put it in a modern frame so see how it would frame up and it does flatten out with a backer board. But it may need some conservation for future preservation. A few areas of black color scuffs (ink?) on the surface and the typical paint loss around the frame edges along with some canvas wear to the corners and side edges. A vertical surface line of paint scrape loss running vertically through the tressel bridge to the sky. See all detailed pics. Ask any questions should you have any prior to purchase All easily remedied by a restorer. And the painting is very deserving of one. Measurements: 14" x 18" Born in Czechoslovakia in 1920, Yolanda Fusco came to New York City at the age of ten, and she started painting at the age of twelve. She studied at the Art Students League with Ernest Fiene, Harry Sternberg, and Vaclao Vytlacil, and also studied textile design at Pratt Institute. She then worked in textile design, and taught art clubs and adult education. She married a chemist and had two children. She first visited Monhegan at the urging of artist friends in the summer of 1959 and became a founding member of the Women Artists of Monhegan Island. She died in Scarborough Maine, August 2009.
