Description: Amsterdam was founded in the 13th century as a small fishing village behind a dyke/dam that protected the residents from the Amstel river. Hence the name Amstel - Dam. Back in the 17th century, residents were taxed based on the width of their property, making a thin house a great way to save money. As a result, the narrowest house in Amsterdam has a facade that is only three feet wide!
