Description: From the front flap of a 1954 ML edition: “Since 1881, when it was first published, Washington Square has had three incarnations. In its original form, it was the novel by which Henry James won world-wide recognition in his early maturity. As a play, under the title The Heiress, its glowing story held thousands of theater-goers under its spell. Finally, as a motion picture, under its new title, the novel once again gave evidence of its vitality and popularity to a new mass audience. Now Washington Square takes an honored place in the Modem Library with three other famous works by Henry James: The Turn of the Screw, No. 169, The Wings of the Dove, No. 244, and The Portrait of a Lady, No. 107. Clifton Fadiman contributes an illuminating and perceptive Introduction for this distinguished addition to the series.” 248 pgs.Collectors’ Corner: The book has a Toledano 17 cover, C or Bernhard endpapers, and an r jacket. The copyright page states “1997 Modern Library Edition” and the list of numbers on the copyright page includes all digits 1 through 9. These pointers indicate a 1st printing of this volume in the ML 90's iteration. The book is in at least very good condition. The cover is clean with no signs of wear and the gilt it bright. Fanning the pages in both directions, I noted no writing or underlining, no offensive odor, and the binding is so firm to indicate the book is unread. On the front free endpaper, there is a crayon block over what I presume was a prior owners name. The unclipped dust jacket ($14.50) is otherwise complete with no chips, no nicks, no edgewear and no soil. See photos. As I draft this, there is only one copy of this 1990's ML issue on ABE, with issues.
