Description: *MINTY KOTO* WWII Japanese Samurai Sword Officer SHIN GUNTO KATANA NIHONTO WW2 Description: I BUY SWORDS AND WHOLE COLLECTIONS! CONTACT US with any questions! 804 23 9 549 0 Item Description: I am pleased to offer this original and old hand-made Japanese sword, or Nihonto, brought back from WWII. The blade represents the opportunity to own a historic Koto katana from the school of the famous Mino swordsmith Kanemoto. The blade is in Near MINT condition and the mountings are in Excellent condition. The sword has a blade length of 27.5 inches (70cm). It features a stout shape with a straighter curvature and a wider mihaba width. The blade is well made and shows well-grained itame hada. The hamon is the classic Mino style sanbonsugi of togari gunome peaks in a repeating pattern that early Kanemoto created. The hamon is present the length of the blade ending in a rounded type of maru boshi. The tang is mumei, or unsigned and suriage, or shortened. Based on the shape and workmanship, the sword looks to have come from the Kanemoto school, ca. 1500’s. Kanemoto was one of the most famous lines of swordsmiths in Japanese history. They worked from the early 1500’s through the 1600’s from Mino province and their swords were famous for their sharpness. They were highly sought out by samurai fighting during this time. Based on the shape and workmanship, this looks to be from a generation working in the late 1500’s. A shinsa should be consulted as final authority. The blade comes in Samurai mountings. They are in Excellent condition. The tsuka features a black silk ito with custom menuki. There is little to no fraying and the wrap looks to have been redone. The tsuba is a nice iron sukashi tsuba with two accompanying metal seppa. The saya (scabbard) is wood lacquered black with a custom finish. It shows a few small dents and small spots of missing finish, retaining roughly 90-95% of original finish. Notably, it is missing the kojiri endcap. It also has a modern sageo knot. The blade is in Near MINT condition. There is one very small micro nick, little to no rust, and just some scattered small scratches along the length of the blade. There are no major flaws like hagire. Given this sword’s history, craftsmanship, reputation of the swordsmith, and high quality mounts, I think this piece would be an outstanding addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
