Description: MINT UNSHARPENED NEW OLD STOCK ANTIQUE CLIP BLADE LOCKBACK DELUXE FOLDING HUNTER MINT UNSHARPENED NEW OLD STOCK ANTIQUE CLIP BLADE LOCKBACK DELUXE FOLDING HUNTER MINT UNSHARPENED NEW OLD STOCK ANTIQUE CLIP BLADE LARGE LOCKBACK FOLDING HUNTER KNIFE / SELECT STAG HILT WITH ORIGINAL DELUXE SHEATH BY ANTON WINGEN / SOLINGEN Recorded German Cutlery goes back as far as 1632, with the earliest German Cutlery Co. FRIEDR. HERDER ABR. SOHN, and in the 1840’s produced some early Bowie knives. German cutlery manufacturers were well poised to take over the World domination of cutlery from Sheffield, who was the knife capitol of the world for the previous 500 years. Beginning in 1891, the U.S. began imposing a series of import tariffs on Sheffield cutlery to spur knife development in America. However, by 1900, Germany's cutlery exports had exceeded Sheffield cutlery exports and accounted for 90% of all American imported knives. Anton Wingen started making knives with his first Trademark in 1875. The Anton Wingen Jr. company was founded in 1888 when he opened a small workshop in Solingen, Germany, and later registered with the Solingen chamber of commerce on November 11, 1901. When the United States began a series of trade tariffs on Sheffield knife makers beginning in 1891 to encourage American knife production, Sheffield knife makers, who had been the predominant cutlers worldwide for centuries, soon lost their lucrative export market. By 1900, the value of Germany's high quality cutlery exports exceeded the once prominent Sheffield's output by 2 1/2 times in 9 short years. Wingen made traditionally designed hunting and combat knives during WWI and used the first of 6 different distinctive variations Man’s head Othello trademarks in 1919. By 1922, the firm was located at 54 Gasstrasse address, Solingen. In the early 20th century, Wingen’s first-class craftsmanship met with widespread recognition. Wingen displayed at the World Exhibitions in Turin and Bern and won numerous international awards including gold and silver medals, as well as the Grand Prix, the highest award. Wingen evolved from simple handicraft techniques to the use of sophisticated techniques, constant use of high technology and strict quality controls, and led the Wingen name to enjoy a worldwide reputation for quality. Some German cutlery companies escaped direct bombing at the end of World War II and were able to recover quickly and begin production. The Wingen company made a lot of contract knives, with about 70 percent of his products exported to America. The product range, once exclusively knives, also expanded to include numerous kitchen articles of all kinds. After the death of Anton Wingen in 1935, his son Hans Wingen and Walter Wingen took over the business. In 1951 the third heir, Erika Wingen, joined the company as a manager. The Anton Wingen Jr. company that was founded in 1888, along with its other brands under its company wing including Othello and Scope, stopped producing products in 1995 and closed in 1997. This is a large, high quality, Anton Wingen Jr. folding hunter lock back knife with select stag scales, horseshoe shaped push lever release with a steel locking lug, and folding cross guard. Note that the cross guard, engraved bolsters with flared flanges to protect the front edge of the stag scales, and the horseshoe lock release tab with steel lug are made from German silver and suggests an earlier model of this folding hunter pattern vs. later examples that were made with all stainless steel. This piece also has aged patina to the German silver mounts that takes decades, darkened stag scales, and original leather sheath, which also indicates some age. This style of hunting / camp knife would be used for clearing a campsite and dressing large game in the open position, and for camp chores and close in work in the closed blade position. Note these style folding hunter knives do not have a backspring. The strip on the back hilt is a 3/16” frame back strap metal piece used as the frame and also acts as a stop for the rear of the blade ricasso. These knives also do not have a nail nick, and opening and closing is manual by grasping the blade back.12 1/2” open, 9” long closed, extremely high quality, and is hefty for its size at 9.5 ounces or 270 grams, 11.3 ounces with the sheath. The 8” clip blade is made from 3/16” stock vs. later models with 5/32” stock, the same thickness as the back spine, with a slight false edge is stamped with a two-line address, ‘ANTON WINGEN, JR.” and “SOLINGEN GERMANY” MARK, along with the word ROSTFREI (rust free, meaning stainless steel) on the front blade flat. Note that stainless is a very hard material, much harder than carbon steel, and is difficult to cut, grind, polish, or mark as a knife blade. The blade has no movement side to side when open nor any wiggle front and back in the lock position and is tight as new. The blade has its original polish, edge, and full tip, and appears the knife was never used, never sharpened, and perhaps never carried. The knife has naturally occurred aged patina visible with the darkening of the stag. Stainless steel is not rust free and can and does rust and create spidering. The inside of the stainless-steel back strap frame shows untouched aging (spidering). The blade tip also has one small spot of naturally occurring aging: probably by the tip resting in the bottom of the sheath and interacting with the chemicals in the leather over time. The sheath shows light handling marks and the German silver sheath tip, along with the German silver folding cross guard, bolsters, Master pin and lever all having verdigris to the surface that has been left in untouched condition. There are very fine rub marks, mostly on the back side blade flat from the inside of the folding cross guard from opening and closing. The hilt tapers slightly from the pommel towards the bolster with a cutout to accommodate the folding crossguard. The select stag scales are perfect with no cracks or chips and show a dark cream color from naturally occurring aging to the usually white colored exposed top and bottom views. The knife is held together with a Master German silver bolster pin with the cross guard, bolsters, release clip and pins all being the earlier (vs. polished steel) German silver and held together with 3 additional large brass pin to secure the brass liners, stainless steel blade and backbone of the hilt. Each side has 3 additional pins that secure the scales to the brass liners. Note the blade and back strap are magnetic stainless, but the other mounts are not as they are German silver. The hilt has a locking feature when the blade is closed, and the internal rotating lock release is designed to unlock the blade in the hilt to open, lock the blade in the open position, and also lock the blade in the closed position via a hole in the ricasso. The knife also locks tight with no blade movement in the closed position. The original unmarked deluxe belt sheath is thick brown tanned embossed leather with reinforced German silver scalloped throat secured on the back side with a pin, the throat is reinforced, and hand stitched on the front and back side belt loop/strap that can also accommodate a belt stud. The knife fits inside the knife perfectly with the top snap securing the knife with a small pull tab for release. I would pry the snap apart rather than pull on the tab repeatedly, as that is how straps get worn and tear. I am calling this knife antique as it has not only dark aged patina to the select stag scales, but genuine aging (spidering) to the inside of the back strap that can be seen with a jeweler’s loupe, as well as the tiny spot of spidering (pitting) on the blade tip. Generally speaking, with antique carbon blades, it takes around a century to produce spidering. The aging, along with the light handling marks with a mint, unsharpened blade, and no evidence of wear on the knife being carried, suggests this piece is new old stock that was put up and shows the expected naturally occurring spidering and aging to the scales. This knife remains in mint, unused condition, with a deluxe original sheath, and authentic, and untouched aging, verdigris, and patina; all in untouched, as found condition. It is hard to date German knives in this pattern, but from the above naturally occurring aging, I would guesstimate this piece to be around 50 - 100 years old, possibly older.
