Description: Original mid twentieth century oil painting by French artist Gabriel Ferro (1904-1981). The painting is a stark view of a street in the industrial suburb of Bagnolet outside Paris, a weary workingman trudging home under a heavy burden. The painting is the antithesis of the thousands of pretty and colorful Parisian street scenes that were being mass produced in the post war period. Good sized, it measures 21x 29 inches, outside dimensions with the original modernist hardwood frame are 26 1/2 x 34 3/4 inches. It is signed, dated for 1945 in the lower left, the reverse of the masonite board is also signed, dated and titled by the artist, the title is "Rue a Bagnolet". It is in completely original condition, has typical surface grime and some scuffing to the frame, a little water staining to reverse edges, otherwise excellent condition. Gabriel Marc Ferro (1904-1981) was a French Social Realist painter of urban landscapes. He was born in Montmartre and studied art the free academies of Montparnasse. Ferro exhibited from 1942 at the Salon d'Automne and he was also a member of the Salon de l’Art Français Indépendant, at the Salon d'Automne of 1951, his painting "the Truckers' Café" was received with much acclaim. Ferro was the champion of Paris' desolate postwar industrial suburbs, its hovels, factories and leprous walls he transformed into art in a symphony of gray and black. His paintings today have the value of documents on a world that has almost disappeared. Ferro's work is in the collections of the City of Paris Museum, the Rodez Museum, the Sao-Paulo Museum, as well as the collection of President Ronald Reagan. Ferro was quoted in a Roussard Gallery exhibition catalog in 1955: "I know! I paint gray, but the many shades within this nostalgic color is where everything is subtle."
