Description: Overwhelmed! The ‘Grillo’ is a vintage Italian design phone… it means cricket…named for its chirping ring tone. It lays claim to be the early for runner to the flip phone. Designed by titans of Postwar Italian design Marco Zanuso and the German industrial designer Richard Sapper. Fabulous sculptural form… masterfully designed. The compact size and automatically opening Clamshell design set ‘Grillo’ apart from other phones that were available at the time. Innovative features that contributed to the phone’s compact size include a dial that replaced the conventional rotary finger stop mechanism with a button in each of the number holes which, when actioned, pushed a pin through the back of the dial to stop the mechanism in it’s correct position! The incorporation of the ringer mechanism into the wall plug rather than the phone itself, and the use of a thin ABS plastic shell also helped reduce both its size and weight. Genius! Manufactured by Siemens Italtel. Examples of the telephone are held in the collections of The MoMA , Cooper Hewitt, Philadelphia Museum of Art to name a few. The design was awarded the prestigious 1967 Compasso d’oro in Milan and the Gold Medal at the 1968 Ljubljana Biennale of Design. Dimensions: 6 3/4” long x 3 1/4” across x 2 3/4” tall. In beautiful vintage condition…. Does receive and send calls…an adapter for use on an American phone jack will be included (photo # 8). A RARE GEM!! Smoke/pet free. Thank you for looking!
