Davis became the manager of Chevy Chase Lake from 1917 through 1930, providing the dance orchestras that appeared nightly during the season. In addition, Davis or his on-site manager at Chevy Chase Lake, J.W. Wood, brought in vaudeville acts – vocalists and dancers, primarily -- to the nightly musical program. He drew from performers who played at local Washington theaters. One of the vocalists featured in 1923 and later in 1926 was Kate Smith. He hired top musicians for his band. Some of those included Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Jimmy Dorsey Vaudeville also hired his orchestras, and he played at Keith’s in Washington D.C. and the Palace in New York City. At his peak, Davis was managing up to 80 bands While all those bands struck up at fashionable hotels and resorts, on Broadway and on ships at sea, Mr. Davis himself provided his distinctive “society beat” for the weddings and debuts of the Astors, du Pants, Rockefellers, Fords, Dukes, Drexels and Firestones. He also led the band at seven Inaugural Balls for Presidents from Calvin Coolidge to John F. Kennedy. He died in 1976. The recordings presented in Encore 1 to Encore 4 were made at the peak of the bands success. There are interesting jazz orientated arrangements on many of the selections. All have been digitally restored by Vintage Recordings.
