Description: Memoirs of Mrs. Elizabeth Fry, Including a History of her Labors in Promoting the Reformation of Female Prisoners, and the Improvement of British Seamen. By the Rev. Thomas Timpson, Honorary Secretary to the British and Foreign Sailor's Society, and Author of the "Companion to the Bible," "The Angels of God," British Female Biography, etc. Published by Stanford and Swords, New-York, 1847. This scarce earlier work on the life of a prominent woman social reformer is in good minus condition. It is an ex-library copy with a spine label. Card pocket inside the front cover, which is pasted over an earlier library card. The card pocket has caused discoloration through the front endpaper and the title page. There is a name in ink on the front endpaper which bled thru the reverse. All text on title page remains clearly readable. The text has moderate foxing throughout, with pages otherwise unmarked, except for one hand-written bracket on page 309, pictured above. The binding is secure, and there are no loose, creased or torn pages. At the rear of the book is a Catalogue of Episcopal Works, published by Stanford and Swords, via the Old Episcopal Bookstore, est. 1787. The corners of the cover are bumped/frayed, and the top and bottom edges of the spine are chipped and torn - see photos. This is an excellent find for researchers and collectors alike!
