Description: Condition as seen. Short letter with a name I could not pin down to a particular Soldier, seems a new recruit in 1864. May 19, 1864 My dear wife I have not written to you lately for want of a good chance. We got to our regiment a few days ago. Have marched round a good deal and feel a good deal. Fatigued. We were under fire yesterday. One of our company was killed. I don’t know of much to write about. Gudson is here now. Was glad to see him. He feels right good spirited. I hope that all will come out right with us yet. If I get a chance soon, I will write you an account of all our trip here. I have seen about what war is now. I would like to hear about the draft. Our men are putting up strong for fortifications here. I think that nearly all of the people look upon this as the_______ campaign and it may be that the war will be closed this summer. I hope and pray that it may. Well, I must close for this time. Hope I may be permitted to write you soon again. Very affectionately yours, S W Lurman
