Description: First described by John Lindley in 1837, Maxillaria tenuifolia is an orchid native to Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. Plants can be found growing at sea level to 3200 feet above, in rainforests, tropical forests on airy trees, and sometimes in ravines of warm oak forests. It is a medium-sized, cool to hot growing, solitary leafed epiphyte or occasional terrestrial with an ascending growth habit. This orchid is most known as the "Coconut Orchid" for its fragrant, coconut-scented flowers. 4" pot *You will receive the exact plant pictured. Plants may or may not have dried ends, torn/broken leaves, but is unlikely. Not all leaves or flowers of this plant may be present when shipping as seen in the photos. This plant may show high levels of stress from transit through yellow, drooping, or dropping of leaves/flowers. It may take an additional 2-3 weeks to recover (provide proper humidity during the recovery time). --------------------------------------------- Foliage:Rhizome growing up to 24" in height completely enveloped by scarious, imbricating, nonfoliaceous bracts with oblong-elliptic to oblong-obovate, compressed pseudobulbs. Pseudobulbs are 3/4"-2.5" long by 1/4-3/4" wide with a single apical, linear, attenuate, 4.5-20" long leaf. Blooms: Single flowered inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb during Spring and Summer with scarious, basal bracts with the flower held at mid leaf height. Flowers are 1.5-2" in diameter with a very distinct texture and coconut-like fragrance. Color is slightly variable, but usually dark red with light or dark yellow marbled patterns. Lip is dark, deep red from the base to half-length while apical part is dark yellow with red-purple or red-brown spots. Prong is yellow with dark red spots at the front. Zoned: 10-12 Environment: Medium to high humidity. It will usually tolerate indoor levels with slight difficulty. Grows best in 65-85 degrees F and will tolerate as low as 40 degrees for a very, very short period of time. Needs good air circulation - not suitable for closed terrariums or containers. Light: Bright light. Try to avoid North-facing windows due to lack of sufficient lighting. Leaves will burn under direct sunlight. Soil: Orchid mix, medium fir bark, Sphagnum moss, or superior-draining soilless mix. Mixture should always be loose, airy, and drain well. Basket base layer can be made of coconut husk, coconut chip, or even newspaper as the plants are growing out their roots. Water: Mist thoroughly (or water evenly) every 3-7 days depending on humidity and heat. Decrease watering if the humidity levels are higher. Do not let the soil dry out completely. Soggy leaves or overly damp soil may encourage leaf drop and disease. Decrease water in winter. If growing on bark or cork, you may need to water daily and ensure the humidity stays above 60%. Fertilizer: Use a balanced fertilizer every month during the growing period. It is advisable to use a epiphyte fertilizer mix or a general-purpose fertilizer diluted to 1/4 of the directions. Notes:This plant is not considered toxic, but should not be consumed. Consumption may lead to stomach discomfort or upset.
