The Sony ICF-SW100 shown in the listing is NOT included in this sale, but is shown to demonstrate the antenna in operation. If you have a portable multiband receiver that has longwave reception, it will likely have a built-in ferrite antenna for receiving those longwave and mediumwave signals. However, ferrite antennas built into such receivers have major weaknesses: They are usually made cheaply (shortened) and do not offer best signal recovery for the radio. They offer weak reception. They do not tune the antenna to match the incoming signal, you can tune the radio, but not the antenna to optimize reception This longwave tunable ferrite antenna is a tool for those people who enjoy NDB signals, DXing longwave transmissions, and hearing other unusual longwave signals. To operate the tunable antenna, you need to experiment with placement of the antenna near the radio, with tuning the antenna for best sensitivity and also with rotating for best signal reception. This experimentation will differ from radio to radio with some units being an easy match. Other radios require some time to determine the sweet spot location of the internal ferrite to couple with the tunable LW antenna and a little more time to tweak reception. To control the side channel interference and the strong signals, you have two controls. First, you can adjust the antenna tuning to control to peak or null the signal strength. Second, you can rotate the antenna to improve reception the signal on the desired frequency and attenuate another signal on a nearby frequency. We found that the combination of these two controls allowed us to generally improve reception dramatically on the longwave band and gave our ICF-SW100 much more versatility.
