Description: This vintage 1980s leather Moon Bag was purchased in Manhattan by my Great-Aunt, who lived there her entire life. She passed it down to me in my early 20s & it’s been in my collection ever since. I hate to part with it, but I’m trying to downsize a bit and I’m sure someone else will fall head over heels for this vintage beauty, like I did. It’s been kept in (closet) storage for decades (in an attempt to protect it) & is in very good condition (see photos for minor aging on face plate). I’ve yet to see another front panel in this pattern. These orig. sold for $175 in 1983, which is about $550 in 2024. A bit of background: Moon Bags, designed by artist Patricia Smith in Milwaukee, Wi, first debuted in the late 1970s. They were characterized their large enamel or lacquer, hand-painted, exchangeable 'plate' which attached to the top/front of the purse. They were typically made in a medium sized clutch shape. "Moon Bags" were not mass produced and each plate style only saw a limited production run. Having found popularity amongst exclusive boutiques during the early 1980s, Smith’s bags became sought after both then and today. They are truly a piece of notable fashion history and are sure to be a conversation piece wherever you carry them. Don’t snooze on this unique, vintage beauty!
