Description: This personally signed (black and white; 4 in. by 5 1/2 in.) photo of the great actor Lon Chaney Jr. was sent to me (as a kid over 50 years ago) by the actor's secretary, Margo Layne, on July 18, 1973--with a personally typed, dated, and signed letter--"shortly before Mr. Chaney died" on July 12, 1973. Back in that fateful year of '73, I saw a blurb in Famous of Monsters of Filmland Magazine by editor Forrest J Ackerman about Mr. Chaney being ill; the notice further stated that, if you wanted to send the ailing actor a get-well letter, you were more than welcome to do so at the listed address. I did, indeed, send a get-well letter and a drawing I made of Mr. Chaney as the Wolfman (perhaps his most iconic role and, from what I've read, the one of which he was most proud). I also requested an autographed photo of the, even-then, legendary actor. A month or so later, I received this letter from Ms. Layne and the autographed photo from Mr. Chaney. Wow! I was stunned and have kept both photo and letter ever since. Note: The photo is in good condition and does have a small stain/scratch by the actual signature, which, in my opinion, is not very noticeable and will go further unnoticed when properly framed. Please see my photos. Thank you.
