Description: LEON RUSSELL, FREDDIE KING, J J CALE & WILLIS ALLEN RAMSEY Tulsa OK 1972 Reproduction Concert Poster This is a high quality lithograph reproduction concert poster for the amazing 'Master of Space and Time' Leon Russell, at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Racetrack in 1972. First known mostly as a session musician, Leon has played with artists as varied as Jerry Lee Lewis, Joe Cocker, George Harrison, Delaney & Bonnie, Ringo Starr, Elton John, B. B. King, Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Willie Nelson, Badfinger, Tijuana Brass, J. J. Cale, David Gates, Frank Sinatra, The Band, Marc Benno, Edgar and Johnny Winter, Glen Campbell, Gary Busey, and The Rolling Stones. With a solo career spanning the genres of rock, blues and gospel, Russell began his musical career at the age of 14 in the nightclubs of Tulsa. He and his group The Starlighters, which included J. J. Cale, Chuck Blackwell and Johnny Williams, were instrumental in creating the school of music known as the Tulsa Sound. After the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour with Joe Cocker in 1970, Leon became the 'go to guy' to organize touring bands most notably the stable of Tulsa musicians Eric Clapton used in the 70's as well as helping George Harrison to organize the tremendous Concert for Bangla Desh. By this Tulsa concert, Leon's solo career was in full swing with the amazing success of 'Carney', his 5th album. Freddie King had a twenty year recording career and became established as an influential guitarist. He had his own guitar style based on Texas and Chicago influences. His was an intuitive style, often creating guitar parts similar to a second vocal line using the open-string sound of Texas blues guitar and the raw, screaming tones of West Side Chicago blues. King had a strong influence on British and American blues-rock musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Peter Green and Eric Clapton. Freddie was signed to Leon's Shelter Records in Tulsa and released three albums with Leon during this period. King died from heart failure on December 28, 1976, aged forty two. J. J. Cale is another of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a very loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country and jazz influences. Cale's personal style has often been described as "laid back". He is a very distinctive and idiosyncratic guitarist, incorporating intense fingerpicking and gentle, meandering electric solos. His recordings also reflect his stripped-down, laid-back ethos; his album versions are usually quite succinct and often recorded entirely by Cale alone. Live, however, he and his band regularly stretch the songs out and improvise heavily. His songs have been covered by a number of other musicians, including "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton, "Bringing It Back" by Kansas, and "Call Me The Breeze" and " I Got the Same Old Blues" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Cale is well known for his longstanding aversion to stardom, extensive touring, and even continual recording. He has happily remained a relatively obscure cult artist for the last 35 years. He played Clapton's Crossroads Festival which led to the recording of the collaborative album with Eric, The Road To Escondido, which won Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008. What an awesome concert this must have been, with these three highly talented and connected performers at the height of their careers!
