Description: A very nice 1st edition copy of Darius Lyman's "Leaven for Doughfaces; or Threescore and Ten Parables Touching Slavery," published 1856. "A Former Resident of the South," Lyman moved to the North and wrote this book to encourage other northerners to support abolitionist causes (and/or criticize them for not already supporting abolition). Includes 70 stories or parables related to slavery, several of which are illustrated. Good+. Binding tight. Boards in good shape with just some bumped corners and light wear to ends of spine. A spot of some sort of stain/discoloration on rear cover. Former owner inscription on flyleaf in pencil. Significant foxing on endpapers and front matter. Some minimal/scattered foxing throughout the text. The corner of one page was miscut so there's a small extra flap of paper. See photos.
