Description: Greater Horseshoe Bat handmade intaglio work for Buffon, 1776: Le Fer-A-Cheval, engraved by Chevilet. Etching and engraving on laid paper from ‘Histoire naturelle‘ by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist, and author, Buffon’s views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. I really enjoy seeing the upside-down bat. And imagining how the French at the time, probably mostly the city denizens who absorbed Buffon's work, must have viewed this image reminds me of the fact it was created in the same year our nation was created. Plate marks: 8.25 inches tall x 6.5 inches wide; sheet: 9.9 x 7.5. Slight browning at two edges and minor fold at corner, as pictured. Safely shipped in archival glassine in a rigid mailer. Thank you for looking. I hope you’ll consider checking out my other listings, and enjoy your day!
